Winged Termites
When you are suddenly exposed to what seems like hundreds or thousands of what look like winged insects how do you know what they are? This is a big deal with homeowners who find themselves in that situation. Let’s look at what we do know about this phenomena. In southwestern Pennsylvania, the two insects commonly associated with this swarming behavior are termites and ants. Typically, termites swarmers appear around the beginning of May, often coinciding with Mother’s Day. Termites swarmers, properly called alates, are the reproductive form ot the termite insect.
How They Differ
These termites are different from ants in three anatomical ways: clubbed antenae, two main body segments, and wings greater than the body length. The termites are very small, the wings make them appear larger.
